Volcanoes erupt, throwing out ash, rocks, and melted rock called lava.
If a volcano is active, it can erupt at any time. A dormant volcano is one that has not erupted for a long time .
An extinct volcano is dead. It will not erupt again and will slowly wear away.
Deep beneath Earth's surface, the heat melts rocks.
This melted rock, called magma, flows upward.
If it reaches the top of a volcano, it can spurt high into the air. Gases and hot ash form dense, dark clouds.
Lava shoots upward and flows down the mountainside.
