About one-third of Earth's surface is covered by land. Large and small islands occupy some of this land.
Continents occupy much more of it.
These vast landmasses are surrounded, or almost surrounded, by water.
The great expanses of water between the continents are what we call oceans.
We call our planet Earth, but more than two-thirds of its surface is covered by water. The land between these large bodies of water-the oceans-is divided into seven continents. They are Europe, North America, South America, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica.
