The land between North and South America is known as Mesoamerica. During the 1500s, soldiers from Spain arrived and conquered this territory. The Maya and the Aztecs were people who had lived in Mesoamerica for many centuries. The great civilizations they had built up were finally destroyed.
Both the Maya and the Aztecs built large cities.
Many of their ancient buildings still stand today.
Others have fallen into ruins. The Aztecs built their greatest city, Tenochtitlan, about 700 years ago.
Mexico city, the capital of Mexico, is built over it.
